恩雅于1961年出生于爱尔兰共和国Donegal郡Gweedore镇的一个音乐世家。她的祖父是一个在爱尔兰巡回演出的乐队成员，而她父亲在未经营酒吧生意前是一个名为Slieve Foy Band的乐队领队，恩雅的母亲则曾为一个舞蹈团成员，并在稍后时间于Gweedore Comprehensive School任教音乐。此外，恩雅有四兄弟及四姊妹，其中几位曾于1968年组成一队名为An Clann的乐队(在1970年中改名为Clannad乐队)。1980年，恩雅加入Clannad乐队，乐队成员包括她的兄弟姊妹Máire, Pól, and Ciarán，以及双生的叔父Noel及Padraig Duggan。 在Crann úll (1980年)以及Fuaim (1982年)这两张专辑中，恩雅负责键盘演奏及唱背景音乐。1982年(在Clannad凭"Theme From Harry's Game"成名前不久时)，兼任制作人及经理的Nicky Ryan离开Clannad乐队。恩雅也同时离开乐队与Nicky合作，开展她的个人事业。
